The 5 Privacy Modes of Where App (and When to Use Them)
Hello from the Where.App newsletter! Here are how we've developed 5 tiers of privacy, and by default, you would have extreme privacy with everything locally store on your device.
You Own Your Routes. Always.
Location data is one of the most sensitive forms of personal information. Where you go says a lot about who you are. And that’s exactly why we built Where App differently.
Instead of one-size-fits-all privacy, we designed five distinct modes so you’re always in control of what you share, who sees it, and when. Here’s how they work.
1. Local (Default Mode)
Think of this as your personal diary. Your routes are saved only on your device. No syncing, no sharing with any external parties (including us).
Perfect for: solo hikes, gym runs, or journaling your movements without an audience.
Why it matters: nothing leaves your phone unless you choose.
2. Private (Shareable With Friends)
This is the group chat equivalent. You decide who sees your Wayline, whether that’s your partner, a friend, or your trip crew.
Perfect for: group trip planning, surprise date nights, or sending your mom a safe copy of your hiking route.
Why it matters: you stay in control of access, and revoking it is instant.
3. Public (Visible on Feeds)
Public Waylines are for discovery. They appear in feeds where people search for inspiration, without revealing sensitive information like live locations.
Perfect for: sharing your Saturday coffee crawl or favorite city walk with the world.
Why it matters: travelers get real, authentic recommendations instead of generic listicles.
4. For Sale (Teasers + Previews)
Here’s where creators shine. A “For Sale” Wayline shows hints of what’s inside—tags, a short description, maybe a teaser photo, without giving away the full route.
Perfect for: micro-guides ($20 taco crawls) to premium itineraries ($500 treks).
Why it matters: buyers can see the value before they commit, while your IP stays protected until purchase.
5. Sold (Only for Buyers)
Once purchased, a Wayline becomes a private experience between creator and buyer. Only paying users can unlock the full details.
Perfect for: turning expertise into income.
Why it matters: ensures exclusivity and protects creators’ work.
Why These Modes Matter
With these five levels, you never have to wonder “who can see this?” The answer is: only the people you choose. Whether you’re journaling a run, planning a trip with friends, or publishing a guide for sale, the privacy layer flexes with you.
Experience the World. Share It.
Privacy shouldn’t be a trade-off for usefulness. With Where App, you get both.
